MULTI/DEX advances towards launch with fully on-chain order book exchange

MULTI/DEX, a decentralised exchange being developed on the Internet Computer Protocol (ICP), has reached another development milestone, with founder Dominic Williams saying the platform is moving closer to production.

Williams described it as the world’s first fully on-chain, open-source order book exchange, with features including margin trading, an automated market maker (AMM) and token swaps.

According to Williams, the platform operates without a company owner, conventional servers or custodial arrangements. Its code, including the trading engine, order books and user interface, runs on the Internet Computer network and is updated through its network governance system.

The platform’s website, multidex.ai, currently presents three main services: token swaps, order book markets and yield opportunities. Its markets section is designed to support spot trading and leveraged long and short positions, while the earn section describes options for depositing assets into automated market-making and insurance funds.

Williams also said the platform is MiCA compliant, referring to the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets regulatory framework. However, further details about the basis and scope of that compliance were not included in the announcement.

He suggested that centralised cryptocurrency exchanges could also consider adopting the technology to strengthen security.

The fully on-chain approach is intended to reduce reliance on conventional exchange infrastructure and give users greater visibility into how the platform operates. However, decentralised applications remain exposed to risks including software vulnerabilities, smart contract exploits, market manipulation and liquidity problems.

The latest development brings MULTI/DEX closer to production, although the announcement did not provide a confirmed launch date or details of independent security audits.

The project is part of the wider effort to build financial services directly on blockchain networks, with ICP developers seeking to demonstrate that complex applications such as exchanges can operate entirely on-chain.
