DOM Launches 3D Builder for On-Chain Districts

A district that once existed as a flat 32×32 bitmap can now be built upwards, with DOM launching a new tool that turns owned blocks into 3D voxel scenes.

The BIC Builder is now live as an isometric voxel studio, allowing users to load a district they own and build directly on its grid. Users can raise individual cells, add colour and create different levels of height to turn a flat bitmap into a small 3D environment.

The builder provides 16 colours and 15 levels of height, giving users room to create different shapes and structures within their district.

Once a build is saved, the complete scene is compressed into a 1KB data blob and written directly to dom_bic. The project says the data is stored on-chain in the canister, without relying on a separate rendering server or database.

That means the build itself becomes part of the on-chain record rather than simply being an image generated elsewhere.

The new experience also extends beyond the builder. The district explorer at bitmap.media can read completed builds and display them as 3D scenes.

Users can rotate the district through four viewing angles and switch between the original flat bitmap and the raised 3D version.

For DOM, the update builds on the idea behind its Bitmap in a Canister system, where a bitmap represents a piece of digital land that users can own and modify.

The new builder adds another layer to that concept by allowing owners to physically build within their digital districts rather than simply changing their colour or appearance.

Each completed district can therefore become a small interactive scene that other users can explore.

The update also keeps the creation process on-chain, with the project stating that saved districts remain permanently stored in the canister.

The BIC Builder is available through domburns.xyz, while completed districts can be viewed through bitmap.media.

The release marks another move towards turning DOM’s digital districts from static grid-based assets into spaces that users can build, customise and explore.

Dear Reader,

Ledger Life is an independent platform dedicated to covering the Internet Computer (ICP) ecosystem and beyond. We focus on real stories, builder updates, project launches, and the quiet innovations that often get missed.

We’re not backed by sponsors. We rely on readers like you.

If you find value in what we publish—whether it’s deep dives into dApps, explainers on decentralised tech, or just keeping track of what’s moving in Web3—please consider making a donation. It helps us cover costs, stay consistent, and remain truly independent.

Your support goes a long way.
