Internet Computer AI tools aim to simplify migration from PHP to Motoko

Migrating older web applications built with PHP, traditional web servers and databases to the Internet Computer (ICP) could become easier with the help of AI coding tools, according to Internet Computer founder Dominic Williams.

Williams praised developer Josh Drake, who shared a demonstration of how an existing web application could be moved to Motoko, the programming language used to build applications on the Internet Computer.

The 29-second video shared by Drake, known as @JoshHQ on X, compares two visually identical library websites. One runs on a conventional WordPress and PHP-based infrastructure, while the other operates as a Motoko application on the Internet Computer.

The demonstration focuses on the technology behind the websites rather than changes to their appearance or user experience.

According to the demonstration, an AI coding agent can assist with the migration by examining the existing website, preparing a migration plan, rewriting the application code, updating links and configuring deployment. The aim is to retain the original website’s pages, URLs and functionality while replacing the infrastructure supporting it.

Under the traditional model, a website may depend on several separately managed components, including a PHP runtime, web server, database and operating system. These require ongoing maintenance, security updates and infrastructure management.

The Internet Computer uses a different approach. Applications are deployed through software units called canisters, which combine application code and data. These canisters run on the network and can serve web content without requiring developers to manage a conventional web server and separate database for the application.

Motoko, designed specifically for the Internet Computer, supports persistent memory, allowing application data to remain available between executions without the same reliance on conventional database storage.

Williams welcomed Drake’s demonstration, describing the migration process as much easier with AI assistance. He encouraged developers still relying on older web technologies to consider moving their applications to Motoko.

However, the demonstration should be viewed as an illustration of a possible migration workflow rather than evidence that every PHP application can be transferred automatically or without complications.

The complexity of a migration will depend on the existing application’s architecture, database structure, integrations, security requirements and external services. Developers will still need to test the migrated application, verify data integrity and ensure that existing users can access its features without disruption.

The demonstration highlights a growing area of interest in AI-assisted software development, where coding agents can help reduce the time and technical effort involved in moving applications between platforms.

For the Internet Computer ecosystem, making migration easier could help attract developers and businesses with established web applications, potentially widening the range of services built and hosted on the network.

Dear Reader,

Ledger Life is an independent platform dedicated to covering the Internet Computer (ICP) ecosystem and beyond. We focus on real stories, builder updates, project launches, and the quiet innovations that often get missed.

We’re not backed by sponsors. We rely on readers like you.
