Corporate borrowing linked to artificial intelligence has reached a record $419 billion in US dollar-denominated bond issuance so far in 2026, as technology companies and data centre operators raise funds amid growing investment in AI infrastructure.
The year-to-date total is 90 per cent higher than the full-year figure for 2025 and 437 per cent above the amount recorded in 2024, according to figures provided in the latest data on AI-related corporate debt.
Five major technology companies, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft and Oracle, have issued a combined $157 billion in corporate bonds so far this year. Their borrowing accounts for around 37 per cent of total AI-related issuance.
Data centre and computing companies have also contributed to the increase. Investment-grade companies in these sectors raised $66 billion, while high-yield issuers raised a further $37 billion. Together, these groups account for about a quarter of AI-related bond issuance.
Other AI-linked corporate bonds make up the remaining $159 billion, representing approximately 38 per cent of the total.
The figures point to the growing role of debt financing in the expansion of artificial intelligence. Building and operating AI systems requires substantial computing capacity, including data centres, specialised chips and supporting infrastructure, creating funding needs across technology and related industries.
However, the scale of borrowing also raises questions about how companies will generate returns from their AI investments and manage their debt obligations. Bond issuance alone does not establish whether those investments will prove profitable, and the figures provided do not detail borrowing costs, repayment schedules or the returns expected from individual projects.
With issuance already above previous full-year records, the remainder of 2026 will show whether AI-related corporate borrowing continues at its current pace.
